National Apprenticeship Week
The manufacturing and engineering industries have been experiencing a shortage is skilled workers. Less and less young people are finding their way into the industry to learn the valuable skills that are required to keep it growing. Transcover have experienced this first hand, when recruiting for positions within the workshop, the pool of talented, experienced, skilled workers is getting smaller and smaller.
This was one of the reasons why Transcover decided to introduce apprentices to the workforce. Not only to gain fresh perspectives and the enthusiasm that the recruits bring but fill essential roles within the company, helping to address the skill shortages and provide valuable support to existing staff. The apprenticeship program has helped to build a pipeline of skilled workers for the future, ensuring a continuous supply of talented individuals who are well versed in the company’s operations.
After making the decision to offer students support through their apprenticeships, Transcover organised an open day with MidKent College. Apprentices were invited to out Kent workshop, where they were given a tour of the manufacturing facility, spoke to department team leaders and learnt about various roles and departments within Transcover. Our goal was to inspire and welcome the next generation of talent.
Following our open day, we received applications for the apprenticeship positions, interviews were carried out and positions were offered to Rob and Sam.
Integrating Rob and Sam into the business was relatively easy. The company’s commitment to mentoring and training ensured that the apprentices were able to seamlessly integrate into the various departments and contribute positively to the business. Our team of experienced staff were ready to provide practical, hands-on experience, teach new skills, lead by example and build confidence, in a supportive and nurturing environment.
We caught up with the machining department to see how they are finding working with the apprentices, “it has been challenging at times, working with young adults who have never been in this type of environment before and teaching them skills that are new, but both the guys are enthusiastic and keen to learn. So, whilst it might be hard at times, overall it’s good fun. We like having fresh, new talent in the workshop.”
We believe that it is important for us, at Transcover, to support apprentices on their journey into engineering and manufacturing. We are the only British owned, UK manufacturers of sheeting systems and it is our responsibility to ensure that there are skilled workers available to support, not only our business but the industry for another 30 years. Overall, the apprenticeship program has been and will be instrumental in driving growth, fostering a culture of learning, and securing the company’s long-term success.
“For us, the success of the program, the positive impact on the business, and the value brought by the apprentices have all contributed to the company’s willingness to continue investing in apprenticeship opportunities. We highly recommend other businesses consider it too.” Paul Hines, Managing Director.
